MDF, or Medium Density Fiberboard, is a wood-derived material widely used in the furniture, wall decoration and construction industries. It is made by compressing ground and refined wood fibers to a uniform size, mixed with the use of heat-activated synthetic adhesive resins, and pressed to obtain compact, homogeneous and stable panels.
MDF stands out for its average density (approximately 600-800 kg/m³) and its uniformity, which make it particularly suitable for a wide range of applications, including furniture, wall coverings, decorative panels, profiles for wall decoration and rods for picture frames.
Here are the main features that make it such a versatile product and suitable for multiple uses.
Main characteristics of MDF
- Smooth Surface: MDF has a very smooth and uniform surface, ideal for painting with different types of paint or for being covered with laminates, veneers, papers or other materials.
- Workability: It is a material that is easy to cut, mill, drill and shape, which makes it incredibly versatile and particularly suitable for use in projects requiring a customized design.
- Dimensional stability: Compared to solid wood, MDF offers superior dimensional stability. It means that it is less prone to deform or move following any changes in humidity and temperature. It also comes in panels, which results in fixed lengths.
- Eco-friendly and cost-effectivenes: MDF is produced using predominantly woodworking waste and other recycled fibres, making it a sustainable and more economical choice than solid wood. Two advantages in a single material.
The different applications of MDF

MDF is used to make furniture such as cabinets, shelves, doors, decorative panels and in some cases even for flooring. It is also a particularly popular material for creating moldings and cornices, given its ability to be easily worked, painted or coated. It is a versatile and cost-effective material, offering a good balance between cost and performance for a wide range of uses.
